A new Environment and Natural Resources Law is to be submitted to the National Assembly by the end of this year.

Environment Ministry officials yesterday met lawyers helping them draft the law.

Brain Rohan, an adviser with the Vishnu Law Group, said his firm has been aiding the ministry.

He said the new law currently includes nine chapters and more than 1,000 articles that deal with environmental issues and the protection of natural resources.

“We will finish it and send it to National Assembly for examination and approval at the end of this year,” he said.

“We worked with the Ministry of Environment over two years to prepare this new environment code.”

Environment Minister Say Samal said all environment groups and local authorities should join together to examine the law before its final approval.

“I insist all related officials discuss and examine all articles before the draft is approved because we are afraid that when the code is approved, some will not agree with it,” he said.

Last month, officials promised that the new law would help protect water and air quality while promoting recycling.
