China’s vice premier Zhang Gaoli has said Cambodia will benefit from the expansion of his country’s flagship Belt and Road Initiative.
Speaking to reporters in Beijing on Friday, Zhang Gaoli said the economies of countries involved in the scheme had already increased.
“From 2014 to 2016, the trade exchange among the countries in the BRI was $3 trillion. Though it originated in China, its benefits spread all over the world,” he said.
Mr Zhang, who is chairman of the BRI steering committee, said Cambodia and other Asean countries have much to gain.
“We believe the project will generate benefits to local people in the areas of infrastructure, railway and seaports,” he said.
Shi Guohui, deputy director-general of foreign affairs coordination for the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said a Chinese delegation has just finished a visit to Cambodia to oversee the development of BRI work.
